strip covers ( strip advertisements )

An instruction to a library binder to remove and discard the covers of periodical issues before binding. "Strip advertisements" is an instruction to remove all full-page advertisements (on both recto and verso of the leaf) before binding. Their removal makes for a thinner volume, and thus reduces shelf space required; but the space actually saved compared with the cost to the library of having covers and advertisements removed, plus the loss of potentially valuable historical material, make the practice of debatable value. Cf: BIND ALL . (259 )
