A crystalline salt (Na 2 S 2
O 4 ), prepared by the reaction of
sodium bisulfite with zinc, or by the action of
sulfur dioxide on sodium amalgam. It is used in
bleaching paper pulps, especially mechanical
pulps, and in leather manufacture as a reducing
agent in dyeing. (17
