sodium chlorate
A white. crystalline salt (NaClO 3 ),
formed either by the action of chlorine on hot
aqueous caustic soda, or by the electrolysis of
sodium chloride in solution. It is used in
bleaching paper pulps and also to remove stains
from archival papers. Its chlorine content, which
is extremely difficult to remove. makes it
detrimental to the permanence of paper. Its
bleaching action stems from its strong oxidizing
potential. It also supports combustion.
