sodium carbonate

A mild alkaline (Na2CO 3 ), also known as "soda" or "soda ash." It is prepared by dissolving ammonia in purified brine, the resulting solution being treated with carbon dioxide. It is used in leather manufacture, particularly in chrome tannages, to control pH, and, in the manufacture of paper, in the preparation of chemical pulps. (144 , 306 )
