silk flyleaves

The free flyleaves and board paper of an endpaper assembly made of silk. While very attractive, the use of silk for flyleaves causes problems because it tends to fray at the edges and must, therefore, be turned in. Since this can only be done after the book is trimmed, they must be attached as one of the last operations. This problem can largely be overcome. however, by the use of JAPANESE SILK , which has less tendency than ordinary silk to fray. Silk flyleaves are frequently used in conjunction with leather joints.
