1. A group of incompletely separated fibers. A shive is seen in the finished sheet as small dark specks or splinters. These are particularly prevalent in groundwood papers. In the case of esparto and straw pulp papers they often appear as transparent spots. 2. The non-bast fiber portion of the flax plant. (17 )
