setting the joint

1. In hand binding, the process of positioning the boards against the shoulders of the text block at such a distance and in such a manner that the boards open easily with no strain on the joints when the leather has dried. Setting the joint is done following covering but before setting the headcaps so as not to damage the headcaps by the opening of the boards. 2. In library and edition binding, the process of creating the joints of the book by pressing it between layers of boards ridged with bands of metal, or by applying pressure in a casing-in machine, or heat and pressure in a building-in machine.
