reed

A tall grass, a species of which, Phragmites communtis, covers vast areas of some river deltas in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and which is used in the manufacture of paper. Reed produces a pulp of medium fiber length, that is soft and bulky, and which is particularly useful in making printing and writing papers, as well as unbleached papers and board. Reed pulp is almost always blended with stronger, longer-fibered wood pulps. (144 )
