rawhide
A (cattle) hide rendered resistant to putrefaction
by unhairing, liming, stuffing with oils and
greases, and sometimes by other preparatory
processes. As the name implies, it is not tanned.
It is sometimes used for lacings or trimmings, of
books, but it is far too stiff and intractable to
use as a covering material. (291 , 325 , 363 )
