rattle
That property of a sheet of paper which produces
noise when the sheet is shaken. While rattle is
generally considered to be dependent on such
characteristics as density and stiffness of the
sheet, recent investigations indicate that the
property is primarily associated with the presence
of numerous extremely short fibers among the
normal (longer) fibers of the paper, as well as a
high proportion of hemicelluloses binding them
together. (17 , 139 )
