potassium carbonate

A white deliquescent salt (K 2 CO 3 ), which dissolves readily in water to give a strong alkaline solution. It was used in the execution of BEDFORD STYLE bindings, TREE CALF bindings, etc. Also known as "pearl ash," and "salts of tartar."
