porosity

That property a material has of containing interstices. It is defined as the ratio of the volume of the interstices to the volume of the mass of the material, and depends upon the number, shape and distribution of the voids, as well as their shape and orientation. The term is sometimes used incorrectly to indicate permeability. (17 , 139 )
