polyesters
Resins, plastics, and synthetic fibers based on
resins produced by condensation of polyhydric
alcohols with polybasic acids. Linear polyesters,
e.g., polyethylene terephthalate, are saturated
thermoplastic materials that are widely applied in
the form of drawn melt-spun fibers and orientated
cast film. Unsaturated polyester resins, such as
the polycondensate from phthalic anhydride,
propylene glycol, and maleic anhydride, will
copolymerize with minor proportions of styrene and
methyl methacrylate under the influence of an
organic peroxide catalyst, to produce thermoset
materials.
