paste-washing

1. The process of applying a coating of thinned paste to the flesh side of leather, so as to cause the leather to shrink slightly and also to help it maintain its shape when covering. 2. The process of applying thinned paste to the grain surface of calfskin and sheepskin bindings before tooling so as to clean the leather and fill in the pores to prevent absorption of the glair. 3.
