one on and one off

One of the simplest forms of the HOLLOW , consisting of a strip of paper, linen, jaconet, etc., twice the width of the spine of the book, one half of which is glued to the spine, the other half being folded over the first and glued to it only along the edge. The one on and one off method does not give fully adequate support to the spine in most cases, but it is useful when fastening a book back into a tight cloth case. Additional strength may be gained by folding the paper across the grain. See also:ONE ON AND TWO OFF ; TWO ON AND ONE OFF . (339 )
