monotype
A machine used for casting individual pieces of
type. It was invented by Tolbert Lanston
(1844-1913) in about 1889 and was put into
commercial operation in about 1897. The monotype
is a distinct improvement over theLINOTYPE in that the
individual types produced facilitate replacement
in case of error. The monotype composing machine
is the most successful thus far developed, its
product being almost equal to that of hand
composition. (313 ).
