madder lake ( turkey red )

Any of several herbs of the genus Rubia, and especially an Eurasian herb, R. tinctorium. It contains the glycoside ruberythric acid, which gives xylose, glucose, and the dye alizarin upon hydrolysis. Madder lake is used for dyeing and in the manufacture of marbling colors.
