Jaffé, Mair ( fl 1468-1480 )
An itinerant Jewish bookbinder of ülm who
worked at Nurnberg and was a master of the art of
CUIR-CISELÉ
, as applied to the embellishment of books.
Jaffé bound a Hebrew Pentatuch manuscript
which was decorated with beautifully designed
animal figures, and he also bound books for
wealthy Nurnberg patricians. It is notable that
none of Jaffé's bindings include any
Christian symbols, but instead were decorated with
heraldic and ornamental designs composed of
unicorns, flowers, hounds, and motifs of a similar
nature. (141 )
