1. The number of times a printed sheet has been
folded to form the leaves of a section, e.g.,
folio (folded once to make two leaves or four
pages); quarto (folded twice to make four leaves
or eight pages), etc. In a broader sense, format
is the general proportions and approximate size of
a book or other publication which would result

very loose sense, the general appearance and
make-up of a book, including proportions, size,
quality, and style of paper and binding,
