Manteo

Manteo, North Carolina
Virginia Dare (1859) by Louisa Lander
Virginia Dare was the first English child born 15 days after the first English settlers arrived in New World. Her grandfather, Governor John White, traveled to England to gather supplies for Dare and the other colonists. On Governor White' s return to the New World, his granddaughter, family, and fellow settlers had vanished. The only trace of their settlement was the word "Croatoan" carved into a tree.

What happened to Virginia Dare and the other colonists? No one will ever know the answer. They will forever be known as the "Lost Colony."

Click here to see Pocahontas, another important female in our colonial history. Compare these two sculptures.
