- Herbert H. Espy, former papermaking research associate
chemist for Hercules' Paper Technology Group, recently died at
the age of 64. Espy retired in 1991, after 35 years with Hercules,
where he was primarily involved with research and applications
development of Kymene wet-strength resins, which are used as retention
aids with AKD size. His short history of the origin of alkaline
sizing appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Newsletter.
- James L. Ferris was recently appointed president of the
Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST) in Atlanta.
He came to IPST from the Weyerhaeuser Company. His Ph.D. was
earned at IPST (then IPC). He is the first alumnus of IPST to
become its president.
