Corrections

In the last issue, West Conshohocken (site of ASTM's new headquarters) was mistakenly put in New Jersey, in the Events column. It is really in Pennsylvania, a few miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Free & Cheap Literature from the Abbey Office

The first three items listed below are superseded or extra copies. The last item is an 18-page offprint, of which 36 copies are available individually. To claim them, call 512/929-3992 and ask for Ellen McCrady. First come, first served. Available for the cost of wrapping and shipping.

  1. Thirteen issues of the Journal of Pulp & Paper Science from July 1994 to January 1996. Run not complete. These issues are available simply because the publisher(s) send a duplicate subscription. I have notified them, but the duplicates keep on coming. This is a good journal, very technical. It would be a shame to throw these issues out.
  2. TAPPI 1994-95 Membership Directory. Over 1000 pages, one-third of which lists members under their employers, which are arranged alphabetically and geographically. Back cover missing.
  3. Paper Buyers' Encyclopedia for 1994/95. This is the deluxe edition of the Grade Finder, which lists fine papers on the market, by type, and gives a great deal of information about each, including whether they are alkaline or not. Many additional sections give other lists and information.
  4. "Darkening of Paper Following Exposure to Visible and Near-Ultraviolet Radiation," by S.B. Lee, J. Bogaard and R.L. Feller. Journal of the American Institute for Conservation, v. 28, p. 1-18, 1989. Two of the authors worked at that time at the Research Center on the Materials of the Artist and Conservator at Carnegie Mellon University, and the third at the Library of Congress. The work was undertaken to increase understanding of the effect of light on paper-based artifacts on exhibit or in storage. Four types of waterleaf test sheets were used: groundwood pulp, unbleached pulp, filter paper and bleached pulp. Bleaching and darkening under light exposure, and darkening after 90 days storage, are traced in graphs. Test sheets were brought to 7 pH levels; those with higher pH showed much less darkening. Presence of varying amounts of HAS matter had no positive correlation with post-irradiation darkening.

The Alkaline Paper Advocate is issued quarterly, and has about 400 subscribers. (Before 1995, it was issued six times a year.) Subscriptions (which include a free pH pen and a list of Useful Addresses) are on a calendar year basis: All start with the first issue of the year, unless otherwise requested, and end on Dec. 31, or after the last issue of the year has appeared. An index for the previous year is sent out in the first quarter. Individual subscriptions are $35; full-time students $20; institutions $45. All issues are in print and indexed. Checks should be made out to Abbey Publications, 7105 Geneva Dr., Austin, TX 78723. Visa or MasterCard payments are convenient for payments from abroad, but for domestic payments we prefer checks drawn on a U.S. bank. We can send an invoice on request.

Abbey Publications is a nonprofit corporation set up to encourage preservation of written records, including the use of lasting materials in their creation. No paid advertisements are accepted, but anything with news value will be printed if there is room for it. News items and information may be sent or called in at any time. Readers are encouraged to copy or circulate issues and parts of issues, and to reprint unsigned articles and news items; but the Editor's permission must be obtained for making more than 20 copies of lengthy or signed articles. This allows us to consult with the author (who may hold copyright), make any necessary corrections or updates before duplication, and confirm that the copies are being made for purposes not inconsistent with the nonprofit mission of Abbey Publications.
