- Clarence Hanford died July 22, 1992, at the age of 65. He
had been Aquapel Product Manager at Hercules in the 1950s, when
AKD was a new product. He knew William J. Barrow and attended
the 1960 conference on permanent/durable book paper in Washington,
D.C., sponsored by the American Library Association and the Virginia
State Library. He had been the owner of Horizon Technologies in
Lake Oswego. In the late 1980s he sold his business to Vinings
West in Washougal, Washington, and was Executive V.P. of Vinings
Industries at the time of his death.
- Dr. W. Howard Rapson, who spoke on natural aging of pulp at
the TAPPI Paper Preservation Symposium in 1988, was awarded the
John S. Bates Memorial Gold Medal on January 28 by the Canadian
Pulp and Paper Association in recognition of his long-term contributions
to the industry. These included the introduction of chlorine dioxide
to the pulp bleaching process, development of technology for producing
it onsite at the mill, and development of the Rapson-Reeve closed
cycle mill, which eliminates the principal cause of pulp mill
water pollution. He holds over 175 patents in 45 countries and
has been awarded a number of national and international honors.
