Mill Conversions
- "Domtar's Windsor (Quebec) mill converted its third and last
machine to alkaline on December 6. Domtar, like many companies, has
been making at least a few grades alkaline for years, but this is
its first 100% alkaline mill.
- Noranda Forest Recycled Papers, in Thorold, Ontario (formerly
Fraser Inc.), went alkaline in November 1990. Of the 12 fine paper
mills in Canada, four are alkaline and one (Provincial Papers in
Thunder Bay) is neutral. The others are CPFP in Dryden, Island
Paper in New Westminster and Prince Albert Pulp & Paper, a
division of Weyerhaeuser Canada. E. B. Eddy has one alkaline mill,
but it is in the U.S. (Port Huron, Michigan).
- Strathmore's Woronoko #2 mill converted in late summer. That's
three down and one to go for Strathmore. Their first mill converted
on Labor Day, 1989.
- Georgia-Pacific's Port Edwards mill converted July 15. This is
one of the Nekoosa mills bought by Georgia-Pacific in early 1990.
It was in the process of converting to alkaline when it was
acquired.
