Alkaline Papers
- Readers of this Newsletter who are totally committed to the use
of alkaline paper on every possible occasion will be glad to hear
that there are nine brands of envelopes made of alkaline paper
listed on p. 113-114 of the Competitive Grade Finder,
the first two of which are comercial envelopes: Jaguar Envelopes,
from Unijax, Inc.; and PCA Envelopes, also from Unijax.
- The LDS Distribution Center in Salt Lake City has alkaline lined
paper for three-ring notebooks. It is at 1999 W. 1700 South, zip
84104.
- Restoration Source (3666 South 2455 East, Salt Lake City, Utah
84109) has developed an attractive lined sheet for journals kept in
three-ring notebooks. The paper is a very light grey, and the ink
is a darker grey; a line for the date is in the upper left corner
and a box for page number is in the upper right. The paper is Fox
River's Technaclear.
- Weyerhaeuser Paper Company has added a warm natural shade to its
line of Cougar Opaque printing papers. Because it also can be used
in their photocopying machine, BookLab, an edition binding and
conservation service in Austin, Texas, is using it to make bound
photocopies of brittle books. (The last two issues of this
Newsletter, and probably this me too, are printed on white Cougar
Opaque.)
- Hammermill Tidal DP is currently the largest-selling
mill-branded dual purpose sheet in the industry, according to a
statement from the company quoted in the October PIMA,.
(Tidal MX has been phased out.)
- Another Hammermill paper, besides the four mentioned in the last
issue, that comes in colors (pale to media) is Fore 9000 DP (now
Fore DP). In fact, all Hammermill colored papers are now
manufactured alkaline, though there may still be some acid stock an
the merchants' floors and in the swatch books. Also, Hammermill
Bond is now formulated so that it will run in laser printers and
copiers, as well as in xerographic copiers, in all 17 colors and
white.
