Mill Conversions
- Eastern Fine Paper, Inc., a one-mill company, converted to
alkaline over two months ago. It was relatively easy: they did it
over a weekend. Although the mill in Brewer, Maine, only makes 180
tons daily, Walden's Paper Catalog shows that they make (or made, at
the time the data was compiled) 36 brands of paper, including dry
and dextrine gummed flat papers. Sometimes a product line is
narrowed at the time of conversion. Eastern's address is PO Box 129
Brewer, ME 04412, 207/989-7070. (Some of their papers are colored,
by the way.)
- Westvaco Corporation's Fine Papers Division has three mills:
Tyrone, Luke, and Wickliffe. Tyrone converted about three years
ago, and Wickliffe converted not long before mid-October. When the
mill in Luke, Maryland, is converted, the company will be 100%
alkaline, as far as its fine paper production goes.
- Fletcher Paper Co. converted in mid-June of 1989.
