Head, Preservation Reformatting Department
Columbia University Libraries

Responsibility for managing the preservation reformatting program, including microfilming, digitization, and other technologies. Duties include: writing and monitoring contracts with filming, digitization, photocopy and photography vendors; managing grant-funded projects; supervision of technical staff who microfilm, digitize and photograph materials and perform quality control; and supervision of staff who prepare materials for reformatting (establishing bibliographic control, targeting, collating, and physical preparation). Responsibilities also include coordinating pre- and post-filming procedures; management of the customer order program for microfilm and still photography; and assisting in all aspects of Preservation Program, including training, publications, committees, disaster prevention and recovery, and system-wide planning for preservation.

Requirements are: knowledge of preservation microfilming and digitization policies and technical procedures, with 1 year of experience in a microfilming operation or other relevant preservation experience required; knowledge of bibliographic control of microforms and current preservation trends, especially electronic applications; ability to work in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Formal study of preservation and supervisory experience in a large academic library are desirable. An accredited MLS or equivalent experience, and knowledge of one or more foreign languages are also required.

Salary minima are: Librarian I: $35,000; Librarian II: $37,500. Excellent benefits include assistance with University housing and tuition exemption for self and family.

Field Service Representative/Preservation Information Specialist

NEDCC seeks individual with thorough understanding of library and archives preservation and excellent writing, verbal and computer skills to join its field service office. Responsibilities include performing surveys of libraries, historical societies and other institutions; maintaining and communicating up-to-date technical information; assisting in administration of field service program. Requires MLS or equivalent, minimum of 2 years professional experience in a library, archives or museum. Specialized training in preservation or conservation highly desirable. Grant funded position, low to mid 30s depending on qualifications. Paper Conservator, GS-12
National Archives & Records Administration

The National Archives & Records Administration seeks a Paper Conservator, GS-12, with some experience in other areas (i.e., bound volumes, photographic materials, textiles, woods, and/or metals). Serves as a senior conservator in a large conservation laboratory with responsibility for performing a wide range of conservation and preservation work, including examination and treatment of archival records, development of special projects, work with archival colleagues, and some teaching and training. Experience in archives or library conservation desirable. Position is located in College Park, MD. Starting salary $44,458. Announcement closes January 31, 1997.
