Preservation, Field Services Representative
Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts

Pending funding, the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, the regional conservation center in Philadelphia, is seeking an individual to assist the Preservation Services Officer in the implementation of outreach programs and services. Reponsibilities include conducting overview surveys of libraries, archives, museums, and institutions with historic collections; conducting educational programs and workshops; developing and managing the reference collection; preparing a quarterly newsletter; and developing technical information on preservation topics for clients. Requirements are: MLS degree or equivalent, plus two years experience working in a library, archives, or museum; a thorough understanding of preservation principles, practice and issues; and excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Some travel is required. Position available in January 1994. Salary is commensurate with experience. Boston College

Responsible for implementing a comprehensive conservation program for the John J. Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections at Boston College. The Burns Library includes nearly 100,000 volumes and is especially strong in the areas of Jesuitana, British Catholic authors, Irish history and culture and Boston history. The library also holds over 4.5 million manuscripts pertaining to the history of Boston College, the United States Congress, and numerous literary figures of the nineteenth and twentieth centries. The primary responsibility of the Conservator will be to administer to the needs of the book collection, using a newly constructed conservation laboratory within the library. The Conservator will also assist the Burns Librarian in long-term preservation planning and aid curators in the preparation of all exhibits. The Conservator will also be expected to advise the O'Neill Library, the University's main library, on preservation needs.

Qualifications: A Bachelor of Arts degree is required as well as formal training in specialized book conservation and a thorough knowledge of standard conservation techniques relating to papers and historic bindings of all types. Background in preservation planning and experience in using technological devices to monitor library environments. Knowledge of the history of paper and fine printing is desirable, as is previous library experience. Strong interpersonal skills are also important.

Head, Preservation Reformatting Department

Columbia University Libraries

Responsibility for managing the preservation reformatting program, including microfilming, digitization, and other technologies. Duties include: writing and monitoring contracts with filming and photography vendors; managing grant-funded projects; supervision of technical staff who microfilm and photograph materials and perform quality control; and supervision of staff who prepare materials for reformatting (establishing bibliographic control, targeting, collating, and physical preparation). Responsibilities also include coordinating pre- and post-filming procedures; management of the customer order program for microfilm and still photography; and assisting in all aspects of the Preservation Program, including training, publications, committees, disaster prevention and recovery, and system-wide planning for preservation.

Requirements are: knowledge of preservation microfilming policies and technical procedures, with 2 years of experience in a microfilming operation required; knowledge of bibliographic control of microforms, current preservation trends, and library automation; ability to work in a fluid, complex organization and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Formal study of preservation and supervisory experience in a large academic library are desirable. An accredited MLS or equivalent experience, and knowledge of one or more foreign languages are also required.

Salary ranges are: Librarian I: $32,100 - $41,730. Librarian II: $34,100 - $46,035. Excellent benefits include assistance with University housing and tuition exemption for self and family. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
