Preservation Officer
University of Maryland

The University of Maryland College Park Libraries invites applications for the position: Preservation Officer (Librarian II or equivalent).

Responsibilities: Responsible for the planning, implementation and administration of a comprehensive conservation/preservation program for the UMCP Libraries, encompassing all aspects of materials treatment.

Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library science and advanced training in book conservation/preservation; or professional degree and experience in conservation/preservation.

Experience: At least five years of progressively responsible experience in an academic or research library, at least two of which must have been at the managerial level. Extensive experience in the treatment of library materials and comprehensive knowledge of preservation issues. Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out a conservation/preservation program, working with both faculty and library staff in the accomplishment thereof.

Assistant/Associate Paper Conservator
Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library

Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, a world renowned museum of early American decorative arts and horticulture, is seeking an experienced individual to fill a position in the paper conservation laboratory of the Conservation Division. Conservation activities at Winterthur address three key areas: conserving the Museum's extensive collections, teaching in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Art Conservation Program, and engaging in productive professional activities, including research .

The Assistant/Associate Paper Conservator will be responsible for participatory and independent work on the museum and library's paper collections. Work includes examination and documentation of the paper-based objects, proposals for their treatment, as well as execution of those treatments and preparation of collection condition surveys .

Two years experience performing duties commensurate with the responsibilities of an Assistant Conservator in accordance with the AIC standard of ethics and practice or graduation from a three year conservation program/ masters degree in conservation or related field (Assistant level). Graduation from a three year conservation program/masters degree in conservation or related field and five years work experience in conservation commensurate with the responsibilities of an Assistant Conservator and following the AIC standard of ethics and practice. Equivalent combination of work experience and education also acceptable, provided that the applicant has BA degree. An established and recognized effective ability to teach and instruct on a graduate level also necessary supervisory experience preferred (Associate level).

Preservation Information Specialist

Northeast Document Conservation Center seeks a self-motivated individual with excellent writing, communications, and organizational skills to advise libraries, historical collections, and other institutions on the preservation of book and paper collections.

Responsibilities: Providing technical information on a wide range of preservation topics to clients; maintaining and updating technical information resources and publications; public speaking; assisting program director with program administration.

Requirements: Thorough understanding of preservation principles, practice and issues; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills; ability to work with minimal supervision and solve problems effectively; MLS or equivalent- minimum 2 years professional experience in a library, archives, or museum. Desirable: Formal, specialized education and experience in preservation or conservation. Some travel required.

Grant-funded position, mid to upper $20's. Anticipated starting date May 15.
