A Word From The Editor

If you are planning a conference and hope to attract people from a distance, you can remove an obstacle for some of them by including a roommate request form in with the registration material. The American Association for State and Local History does this regularly, and reports getting many requests for each annual meeting, with no problems. The hotel does not have to do anything but split the bill, since the reservations are made in one name. The applicants are matched by the local arrangements person, on the basis of age, sex and smoking habits. If they are unable to match someone, they notify them as soon as possible.

The roommate service is not a hotel reservation service. A disclaimer to the effect that the service in no way obligates AASLH or the local arrangements committee appears on the form.

A sample form will be sent on request from the Abbey Publications office. Enclose SASE.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued eight times a year and has about 1050 subscribers. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise. All subscriptions expire on the last day of the year. To initiate or renew a subscription, send $35 (full-time students and unpaid interns $20), or the equivalent in sterling to Abbey Publications, 320 E. Center, Provo, UT 84601 (801/373-1598). Checks in U.S. dollars must bear the name of an American bank on the front.

No paid advertisements are accepted, except from advertising agencies placing job ads. Amy notice that is appropriate and newsworthy will be printed if there is room for it. Written contributions and bits of news are welcome. Claims for issues never received, or received in damaged condition, will be honored within a year of publication. A complete list of back issues, useful for claiming, is available.

The Abbey Newsletter is selectively indexed in Art & Archaeology Technical Abstracts, the Institute of Paper Chemistry Abstract Bulletin and Graphic Arts Literature Abstracts (RIT). It is not indexed in the usual periodical indexes because it is a newsletter. All issues but v.1 #2 are in print.

The Editor encourages readers to copy and pass around any article or issue of the Newsletter; but before copying any part in more than 20 copies, they must obtain permission from the Editor.

Descriptions of procedures, products and events in the Newsletter are not to be construed as endorsements of then.
