If you are planning a conference and hope to attract people from a distance, you can remove an obstacle for some of them by including a roommate request form in with the registration material. The American Association for State and Local History does this regularly, and reports getting many requests for each annual meeting, with no problems. The hotel does not have to do anything but split the bill, since the reservations are made in one name. The applicants are matched by the local arrangements person, on the basis of age, sex and smoking habits. If they are unable to match someone, they notify them as soon as possible.
The roommate service is not a hotel reservation service. A disclaimer to the effect that the service in no way obligates AASLH or the local arrangements committee appears on the form.
A sample form will be sent on request from the Abbey Publications office. Enclose SASE.
