Duties: Under the general direction of the Heed, Preservation Department, is responsible for the daily operation of the Library's Conservation and Book Repair Unit. Performs and documents conservation treatments on fragile and valuable library materials. Hires, trains, schedules, supervises

and evaluates a staff of 6.25 FTE including two conservation assistants, three bookbinders, and .25 FTE administrative assistant. Prepares unit goals, budget estimates, monthly reports and other routine documents related to unit operations. Advises library staff on collection condition and recommended treatment. Establishes and monitors conservation-related standards, policies and procedures. Purchases and provides for the repair and maintenance of equipment. Researches sources, monitors quality and initiates orders for conservation supplies and materials. Assists in the preparation of disaster plans and in the organization and direction of disaster recover efforts. Assists in the planning and implementation of the preservation education program for staff and users.

Qualifications: At least three years experience in bookbinding and conservation. Broad knowledge of conservation principles and practices, knowledge of historical bindings, and demonstrated ability to perform advanced conservation techniques. Ability to organize and oversee efficient operation of routine book repair operations. Effective interpersonal skills. Good oral and written communication skills. Minimum one year successful supervisory experience.

Preferred: Undergraduate college degree, experience in conservation and book repair unit in large academic library, experience in staff training, experience in planning and budgeting.

Minimum salary: $21,200 dependent on relevant experience.

Indiana University Libraries

Environment: The Indiana University Library System, reflecting the statewide organization of Indiana University, has three major components headed by the Dean of the University Libraries: the several libraries on the Bloomington campus, Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), and the Regional Campuses at six locations over the state with centralized reference and technical services in Bloomington. The Bloomington campus libraries employ 105 library faculty and 200 support staff members. IUPUI and the Regional Campus Libraries collectively employ 65 librarians.

Job Description: The Head of the Preservation Department reports to the Associate Dean for Technical Services and to the Associate Dean for Collection Management and Development. Duties include: planning and establishing preservation priorities; formulating preservation policies and administering their implementation; serving as the primary resource person for preservation-related matters for the Indiana University Library system; managing department resources, including the budget for commercial library binding; providing education programs for library faculty, support staff, and users; managing staff responsible for disaster recovery. Participates in the planning and administration of grants in the preservation area. Serves as a member of Technical Services Administrators, of Collection Management Committee, of Administrative Council, and as ex officio of the Preservation Committee.

Qualifications: Required: MLS from an MA-accredited library school; advanced training in library materials preservation; organizational, managerial, and supervisory skills; three years of successful library experience in increasingly responsible positions; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to work well independently and with others; ability to meet the responsibilities and requirements of a tenure-track position.

Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience. Minimum: Assistant Librarian, $20,470; Associate Librarian, $25,650; Librarian, $31,350. Liberal benefits. Librarians are eligible for sabbatical leaves and other research support.

Society of American Archivists, Chicago

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the SPA' s Executive Director and Education Officer, and with the guidance of a distinguished advisory committee the Program Evaluation Officer will conduct an intensive 18-month evaluation of SAA' s preservation program, including the basic conservation (and administration of photographic collections) workshops, the preservation consultancy program, and the Preservation Management Institute. An important part of this responsibility will be to examine how such activities relate to the broad preservation needs of the archival profession. The Preservation Evaluation Officer's primary responsibility will be to design and conduct an extensive mail and telephone survey with participants in past workshops, institutes, and consultancies in order to assess the institutional impact and long-term effectiveness of these Society programs. After evaluating survey findings, and assessing current and anticipated needs of the archival profession, the Program Evaluation Officer will make recommendations concerning changes in ongoing activities, as well as new SPA initiatives in the area of archival preservation. The Preservation Evaluation Officer also will have overall responsibility for coordinating and conducting ongoing SPA preservation activities, including the reference and referral service, preservation workshops, and the preservation consultancy program.

Qualifications: A Master's degree in archival management, conservation, history, or library science with at least three years of archival experience; knowledge of archival preservation techniques, planning, and education; strong skills in designing, administering, and analyzing surveys.

Salary: $25,000-$30,000 annually, depending upon qualifications and experience, along with the Society's standard benefit package. This is an 18-month position, funded by an NEH grant, that begins in January 1988.
