Paste Papers

Two years ago, Maziarczyk Paperworks was doing business under the proprietor's name, Claire Maziarczyk, in Hoboken, New Jersey; there were 29 paste papers available; and a sample book cost $4.50. Now it is at 834 River Road, Schodack Landing, NY 12156; there are 41 papers; and a sample book costs $10.00, which is deductible from first-time orders of $100 or more. No checks are accepted: it is cash, money order or cashier's check only. The paste papers, designs for which are copyrighted, are also available through New York Central Supply, Talas, The Bookbinder, The Paper Source (Los Angeles), and five other outlets; write for brochure.

Unusual Hand Tools

Traditional Hand Bindery (Box 211, Santa, ID 83866) offers three hand tools:

1) Lignum vitae folders--generally more flexible than bone folders. $6 plus postage.

2) Lignum vitae "bamboo" knife. This tool is inspired by the traditional Japanese bamboo knife's ability to separate layers without cutting, but is more durable and perhaps more versatile. $9 plus postage.

3) All-purpose steel "bamboo" knife, 1" wide, flexible for cutting-in boards, paring, trimming.

Ground to sharpest functional bevel - $5 plus postage Sharpened, honed, ready for work - $10 plus postage

Jim Croft, who sent this information, says, "Lignum vitae has been imported from South America to Europe since at least the 18th century and used for fids, pulleys and machinery bearings. It is denser than water and is compatible with water and the materials we use."
