AIC Washington Meeting

Some of the developments described in papers and abstracts from the Preprints volumes of the American Institute for Conservation are:

• A detailed cost analysis for conservation, listing equipment, supplies, and hidden and variable costs (p. 44, A. Farancz et al., "Cost Parameters...").
• A description of the other chemical reactions, besides SO₂ conversion to H₂SO₄, in red rot of leather (p. 147, M. Florian, "A Holistic Interpretation...').
• The new electrocleaning method for daguerreotypes, using a silver electrode (p. 154, M. Barger, "Overall Findings ...'').
• A project to develop a method of fungus identification and culture for conservators, to help with fumigation decisions (p. 167, R. Talbott, "A Fungi Identification Schema. . .").
• A good report card for two silicone pressure sensitive tapes and one adhesive which remained flexible and reversible after aging (p. 163, 5. Haskins, "Practical Considerations...").
• Thin Japanese tissue made on a leafcaster by the Stenstrom method (see "Letters" in last issue of AN), impregnated with hydroxypropylcellulose and applied with ethyl alcohol to make an invisible nonaqueous repair (p. 144, F. Mowery, "A Method..").

The Book and Paper Group had about 13 papers and two panels (on computers and freezers). Over half the papers were on books. The proceedings are available on tape from Cassette Recording Co., and will be reviewed when they appear in the Book and Paper Group Annual. The sizing seminar on May 21, which was attended by 230 people, and the luncheon discussion on changes recommended for the AIC code of ethics, will be described later too.
