Montori & Willett at Indiana University

The Indiana University Libraries has established a Preservation Department, which will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance of library collections. The department, which reports directly to the Associate Dean for Technical Services and the Associate Dean for Collection Development, presently includes a binding-and shelf-preparation unit, a repair unit, and a preservation microfilming unit. Expansion of the department's responsibilities will come after a study of the library's needs.

Carla J. . Montori is the newly-appointed Head of the Preservation Department. She received her B.A. in Classical Languages end Literatures from Smith College and her

M.L.S. degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She comes to Indiana University after seven and a half years in the Yale University Library's Preservation Department. Montori spent six and a half years in that department's Conservation Division as a book conservator, and one year in the Preservation Division as the Mellon Intern for Preservation Administration.

Debra Willett is the Assistant to the Head of Preservation. Her previous experience in preservation includes a year as Conservation Specialist in Indiana University's Serials Department, and six years as Collection Maintenance Supervisor at the library at Southern Illinois University/Carbondale. Ms. Willett received her B.A. in Psychology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and her M.L.S. from Indiana University.

• Jack Thompson writes, "My son, Sam (9 years old), sewed his second book on cords during the Peller workshop and, with a little help from Dad, executed his first full leather binding (goatskin). Daughter Suzanna (5 years old in 2 weeks) has just sewn her first book on cords. When finished it will be 1/4 leather with marbled paper over boards. Both of the kids are good Turkish marblers--neither of them are accepting commissions just yet, but
• Lynn Jones starts in January as Conservation Education Project Coordinator at the University of California, Berkeley. The Project is jointly supported by the University of California and CLASS (California Library Authority for Systems and Services). Workshops will be open to librarians in California and the West.
• Antoinette Dwan is the new Mellon fallow in the paper lab at the National Gallery of Art.
• Lambertus van Zelst is the new director of the Conservation Analytical Laboratory at the Smithsonian Institution. He was formerly head of the Research Laboratory at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
• Sheba Haner has accepted a position as Conservator at the Massachusetts State Archives in Boston after completing a two-year internship in advanced library conservation at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass.
• Martha Morales has resigned as Executive Secretary of the American Institution for Conservation, a position she held since 1977.
• Ole Oleson was the guest speaker at the October meeting of the Hand Bookbinders of California. He is a master book artist from Denmark who has taught at Ascona and is a member of Meister dam Einbandkunst. He plans to return to the Bay Area next May.
• Craig Jensen has retired from his position as Book Conservator at the University of Texas to devote all his time to his private business: edition binding, custom boxmaking and conservation of library materials. Address: 1403 Justin Lane, Austin, TX 78757 (S12/4S1-8647).
• Mark Cain has accepted the position of Program Associate with the Council on Library Resources in Washington, D.C. The Council has received a $5 million grant from the Exxon Educational Foundation and is using it to establish a regional preservation canter serving the mid-Atlantic research libraries in reproducing deteriorated texts, developing national preservation strategies and devising information programs to gain public support for preservation.
• Gary Harrington, formerly an archivist in the State Archives Division, has been appointed Preservation Officer in the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
• Marilyn Ramp Weidner has resigned from her position as Director of Conservation and Chief Conservator at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia and gone back into private practice at 612 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106 (215/MA7-2303). She will also be available for consulting and training.
