Corrections

In the last issue, on p. 76, "Cambridge School of Arts and Crafts" should have been "Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts."

Edith Diehl, subject of E.A. Thompson's biographical article on p. 73 in the December issue, has been dead for many years. The article erroneously gave the impression that she was still alive and teaching.

The source of the information about William Berwick in the article on crêpeline lamination (January 1980, p. 9) was a remarkable master's thesis by Claire S. Marwick, "An Historical Study of Paper Document Restoration Methods," The American University, 1964 (Library Science). It is remarkable because of the large number of primary sources used, and the care and judgement with which the work was done. It is 171 pages long and can be ordered through xerox-University Microfilms, Ann Arbor, MI. Document # M-67O. (Credit was omitted in the article.)

About the Newsletter

• The Abbey Newsletter has a paid circulation of about 475. It has been printed since August 1979 by the Beaver Press, 1518 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005; the pressman there is Michael Cox.
• Selected articles are indexed in Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts. The Wilson publications do not index it because they do not cover newsletters.
• For better access to facts, names and addresses in past issues, the Newsletter's own yearly index is included with this issue. It is the most thorough index yet, including not only author, title and subject, but every name for which an address was given, author and title of bibliographical references cited, most chemicals mentioned, and especially the names of binders and conservators, and their teachers. This was a 25-hour task, made financially possible by the $1000 NEA grant awarded to the editor for the Newsletter last June and announced in the July 1980 issue. That grant has also made it possible to "catch up" by publishing the December issue a month after the November issue, and to research the longer articles in more depth during the entire grant period of July 1980 to June 1981.

  Needs and Priorities in the Conservation of Books and Documents: A Survey of Expert Opinion

• Almost all the illustrations are watermarks, or parts of watermarks, taken from compilations or reference works on the subject.

The Abbey Newsletter: Bookbinding and Conservation is issued 6 tines a year by Ellen McCrady. New subscribers automatically receive all issues published in the current year, unless they request otherwise. All subscriptions expire on the last day of the year.
