Re: carpet cleaning in galleries

Hello all,

In my experience in working with carpet cleaners, dry solutions do not do as good a job in getting carpets clean as hot water solutions.  An experienced operator who is good should not get the carpet so wet that the pads underneath get wet.  The carpet should only feel damp after it is cleaned.  If you have a concern about dampness an operator can go over the floor with the vacuum only, after the cleaning.  This should not be necessary if the operator is good at his job.

Also a system where the run cleaning equipment is mounted in a truck gives a much better cleaning than portable cleaners attached to a tank.  The motor in the turck given units are bigger and the soil is pulled from the carpet more readily.  This is especially important if there is old residue from a previous, improper cleaning.

Why don’t you think of a dry solutions system?  Wet carpets can breed mold fairly easily in the pads underneath.

Subject: carpet cleaning in galleries

Hello all,

The Museum of the American Quilter's Society is at the point where our quilt gallery carpets need to be cleaned.  The maintenance staff is leaning towards Rug Doctor Steam Cleaner with Spotblock.  It's a hot water system (www.rugdoctor.com).  I obtained the MSDS from their website and it appears that it would be suitable.

I plan to use box fans to increase the air flow in the gallery overnight after the cleaning is complete to speed up the drying process.

Does anyone have any opinions about this product based on the MSDS?  Does anyone have other products or systems they have used that they prefer?  If you have any thoughts at all about steam cleaning gallery carpets, please respond.

Thank you in advance.
