The Textile Conservation Group is sponsoring a half-day workshop led by Susan Adler on the use of sodium borohydride in textile conservation Wednesday September 13, 2006 9:30am - 12:30pm at the Textile Conservation Laboratory, Cathedral of St. John the
Divine, Fee: $15 (checks to: "Textile Conservation Group") Reservations to: Rebecca Rushfield,
718-575-2702 Sodium borohydride is a mild, selective reducing agent that acts as a
gentle bleaching agent on degraded cellulosic materials. Because it retards
the oxidation process, treatment with borohydride is beneficial to aged cottons and
linens. Workshop participants will gain hands-on experience with the simple and
straightforward procedure used to treat undyed linens and cottons. They will also learn why this
reagent is so effective, when its use is appropriate, and what its limitations are. Susan Adler, a graduate of the University of Delaware/Winterthur
graduate program in conservation with a textile specialty. She also holds a
master's degree in biochemistry from annual meeting of the American Institute for Conservation. |
