Museum Conservator
Departments of Human Ecology, and Museums and Collections Services
University of Alberta
The University of Alberta seeks a dynamic individual for a Faculty
Service Officer II position of Conservator. Reporting jointly to the
Chair, Department of Human Ecology, and the Executive Director,
Museums and Collections Services, this position serves the
conservation needs of the Clothing and Textiles Collection in the
Department of Human Ecology, and provides leadership in the area of
museum conservation to the University of Alberta Museums as a whole.
The Conservator will spend half-time overseeing all aspects of
textile conservation in the Clothing and Textiles Collection which
consists of more than 16,000 textiles, garments and related artifacts
from around the world housed in a state-of-the art collection storage
facility with a separate conservation laboratory. The Conservator
will spend half-time leading a conservation program for the
University?s 35 multi-disciplinary museums and collections in support
of the University of Alberta Museums Strategic Plan. The University
of Alberta Museums is a community of 35 museums and collections, with
over 20 million objects, specimens and works of art used for
teaching, research and community service. This multidisciplinary
resource is managed in concert with University faculty, staff and
students in a networked research environment. The Department of
Museums and Collections provides central, coordinated services and
programs to the University?s collecting community.
Responsibilities:
Oversee all aspects of textile preventive and treatment conservation
for items in the Clothing and Textiles Collection in the Department
of Human Ecology including teaching, supervising interns and graduate
students.
Lead a conservation program for the University of Alberta Museums,
within the auspices of Museums and Collections Services at the
University of Alberta that includes
·identifying, addressing and evaluating the conservation needs and
issues of the University of Alberta Museums;
·Campus-wide policies and procedures for preventative and treatment
conservation;
·Advisory services on both preventative and treatment conservation
for a range of materials, facilities and issues;
·Developing and delivering training programs;
·Liaison with local, regional, national and international
conservation and related heritage organizations.
Qualifications:
·Masters degree in textile conservation or related field as a minimum
with a demonstrated knowledge of museum conservation.
·Three to five years relevant work experience.
·Demonstrated teaching ability.
·Ability to provide leadership and manage the conservation program
·Project and resource management skills.
·Communication and facilitation skills.
·Knowledge of museum theory and practice, conservation, cultural
property rules and regulations, and standards of practice.
Term: One year term, with the possibility of renewal or permanently
funded after one year. All academic staff benefits included.
Salary: The salary range for the position is commensurate with
experience at the level of Faculty Service Officer II. The 2004/05
range is $51,768 to $73,320.
