Undertaking research on the use of chelating agents in wet-cleaning of
historic textiles.
Reagents tested: EDTA, Tri-sodium citrate and Tri-ammonium citrate
The efficacy of the reagents to remove copper and iron stains from
artificially soiled cotton fabrics will be tested.
QUESTIONS:
Which are the environmental concerns for EDTA?
Which could be the most appropriate way to prepare the samples? (stain them
with metal ions?)
Have you ever used chelating agents?
Which chelating agents have you/would you use?
Which would be the most appropriate way to measure the amount of metal ions
removed other than XRF?
Have you ever used chelating agents made of tartaric or gluconic or
saccharic acid? Would you prefer them to EDTA?
