HISTORY AND RESEARCH

The 2002 Pasold Conference, developed in conjunction with the Textile
Conservation Centre, University of Southampton, will focus on the contribution
that object-based research can make to the understanding of textiles.  This
interdisciplinary conference will explore how conservation can facilitate the
understanding of the physical nature of textiles in terms of their fibres, dyes
and construction but also significantly add to our understanding of their
intellectual and social value through increased knowledge about their use, wear
and degradation.  The papers will explore how evidence derived directly from
specific textiles has, in combination with contextual and documentary evidence,
illuminated understanding and knowledge.
The programme contains contributions from Britain and overseas and include
Santina Levey, Dinah Eastop, Ruth Barnes, Penelope Ruddock, Kate Gill, Amber
Rowe, Anna Javer, Maria Hayward, Natalie Rothstein, Lesley Miller, Jutta
Baumela and Crosby Stevens.  In addition there will be opportunities to visit
the new premises of the Textile Conservation Centre as well as excursions to
local textile collections.
