Nancy, we recently bought two tacking irons for our lab. Both have been
working very well. We got the Coverlite 21st Century Iron mentioned by
Deborah Trupin. This iron is sold by Talas in New York (212 219 0770)
as the "Advanced Technology Tacking Iron" for about $50. It has a
large, 2 1/2" by 4", Teflon coated shoe and has proved very useful for
larger scale adhesive projects. We also got the small "Hot Tacking
Tool" from Talas for about $30. This has several small interchangeable
tips, including a small Teflon coated foot. When used in conjunction
with the "Dial Temp", a rheostat that you plug the Hot Tacking Tool
into, you can vary the temperature of the small iron from very cool
(adhesive treatments) to very hot (cutting Stabiltex). The Dial Temp is
also available from Talas for around $40. Sorry all the prices are
approximate, but my catalogue is a little out of date.
Joanne Hackett.
