Concerning Mary Ballard's thoughts on
the coverage of textile related material in
AATA, as an AATA abstractor for more than
15 years, I have some insights into the
way AATA operates.
Perhaps distlist participants don't know
or have forgotten that AATA depends on volunteers
to produce almost all of its abstracts. If no one
makes the commitment to read and abstract
each issue of a particular journal, abstracts of
articles from that journal may never find their
way into AATA. Many of the journals which are of
interest to textile conservators such as practical trade
journals in fields like dry cleaning are of low priority
to AATA. There are many high priority newsletters
(like the ICOM Committee on Conservation Working
Group newsletters) which are not included in AATA
on a regular basis because they have no definite
abstractors.
If the members of the textile conservation community
are serious about having complete AATA coverage of the
literature they find of interest, each of them must make
the commitment to abstract one or more of these
periodicals.
