Johns Hopkins University selects Kirtas Technologies for nondestructive
digitization efforts
FOSE CONFERENCE AND EXPOSITION, WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL X, 2008 -
Kirtas Technologies, the leader in quality, high-speed, nondestructive
book digitization, today announced it is providing Johns Hopkins
University with a digitization system for the university’s Sheridan
Libraries.
Like numerous research university libraries, the Sheridan Libraries
have some rare and unique collections that need to be made more
accessible to scholars and a large general collection that is
deteriorating due to age and embrittled paper. The intellectual content
of these collections can be saved by digital reformatting which is
ideally suited for the Kirtas digitization process.
The university is using a Kirtas APT BookScan 2400TM, which provides
fast, high-quality, gentle scanning of bound books. The APT 2400
includes proprietary image processing software designed exclusively for
high quality, end-to-end digitization of books including the ability for
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for creating searchable files in
more than 170 languages.
By participating in the Amazon Book Surge program, Johns Hopkins will
also be able to make available rare and out-of-copy collections for sale
through Amazon.com.
