Description:  Under
the direction of the Field Service Librarian, supports the work of the
Preservation Division, which serves the ninety-one libraries that comprise
The New York Public Library. Oversees specific collection surveys and assessments,
assists in analysis of results and may participate in developing treatment
strategies based on results. Gathers collection assessment and survey data
and assists in preparation of reports. Assists the Field Service Librarian
in arranging and conducting training for library staff and the public in
the care and handling of books and other materials, and in training library
staff in disaster response. Participates in and assists in coordinating
disaster response and recovery activities. May supervise staff engaged
in carrying out preservation assessments and collection surveys. Keeps
abreast of current developments in the preservation field. Position involves
some lifting, operating machinery, and exposure to dust. Travel to all
NYPL sites as assigned. Performs related duties as assigned. 

Requirements: MLS from an
ALA-accredited library school. Demonstrated knowledge of current preservation
and conservation treatments and technologies as applied to library materials
in all formats, particularly binding and repair techniques, and knowledge
of preservation issues and current trends. Knowledge of the history of
books and papermaking, and the problems and causes of book and paper deterioration.
Demonstrated knowledge of survey and collection assessment techniques.
Demonstrated computer and related technology skills. Excellent interpersonal,
verbal and written communication skills, including ability to work collegially
across a large, complex, and dynamic organizational setting. Ability to
work independently and as part of a team. Successfully demonstrated project
management and organizational skills. Knowledge of the diverse preservation
challenges a large research library or other major cultural institution.
Membership in ALA preferred.

The research collections of over forty-four million items resemble the
holdings of the great national and university libraries, and the community
circulating libraries with over seven million items resemble classic American
municipal libraries.

The Barbara Goldsmith Preservation Division supports the mission of The New York Public Library by preserving both the artifacts that comprise its rich collections and the intellectual record that they contain. A wide variety of preservation activities are performed in the Division’s five program areas: Binding and Shelf Preparation, Collection Care, Field Services, Conservation Treatment, and Reformatting. These areas oversee binding and labeling of the Library’s books and periodicals; mass deacidification of books, journals and archival collections; construction of protective housings; general collection repair; surveys of the overall condition of the collections; training staff and the public about preservation issues; project planning; environmental monitoring; disaster preparedness and recovery; integrated pest management; reformatting and creating facsimiles of materials; and special collections conservation treatment.

The NYPL preservation program is among the oldest, most comprehensive and significant programs of its kind, working to further develop and strengthen the program to meet the increasing preservation needs of the diverse NYPL collections so that the public – both local and global, present and future – can readily access these vast and diverse resources.
