Re: [padg] security for rare books

Scott,

Princeton has a big 7' high safe that we use for oversize and other rare material.  For secure book storage at the bench we have long bar locks for map files that swing away when unlocked, allowing the drawers to open normally.  These work for regular size underbench cabinet drawers as well.  If interested, I can send an image or two of our setups.

I am in the process of looking at safes for temporarily housing rare books that will be "in process" (i.e., being cataloged in the cataloging department or being repaired in the conservation lab).  As stand alone safes are large and expensive, I'm wondering if anyone has found an effective yet inexpensive solution for providing extra security for these items.

Any comments or information that you can share may be sent directly to s -devine@northwestern.edu

Many thanks,
Scott
