American Library Association Annual Meeting 2007, Washington, D.C.

DIGITAL ASSET MANAGEMENT: IMPLICATIONS FOR PRESERVATION

Saturday June 23, 2007

1:30 to 3:30 pm

Washington Convention Center, Room 151B

Sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS)

Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) and the

Library Information and Technology Association (LITA)

This program will explore the preservation issues implied when an institution begins a digital reformatting program, and how colleagues are addressing them. It will examine program management, including selection, reformatting quality guidelines, technical metadata, and innovative approaches to archiving digital masters. Our past practices addressed preservation concerns of analog materials well into their lifespan. In this digital age, however, we must gather information at the time of creation to improve preservation planning, decision making, and eventual outcomes.

Agenda:

·        Introduction, Karen Brown/Preservation Librarian, University at Albany,SUNY

·        Selection and Program Management, Janet Gertz/Director for Preservation, Columbia University Libraries

·        Metadata, Robin Wendler/Metadata Analyst, Harvard University Office for Information Systems

·        Robust Tools for Archiving and Preserving Digital Assets, Joseph Jaja/Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Institute for Advance Computer Studies, University of Maryland

·        Conclusions & Questions
