Position Available at the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation–Dar Al-Kutub Manuscript Conservation Project


Tradigtial-Cairo, the company that carries out the work of the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation in Egypt, requires a library science specialist to join its small team working on the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation–Dar Al-Kutub Manuscript Conservation Project in Cairo. This is a major, long-term project to catalogue, conserve, and digitise the manuscript collection of the National Library and Archives of Egypt, one of the most important collections of Islamic manuscripts in the world.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is flexible and has excellent oral and written communication skills. They will have a knowledge of collection management principles and an understanding of the nature of scholarly research and publishing. Speaking and writing proficiency in Arabic, Persian or Turkish is desirable as is a bibliographic knowledge of other relevant languages written in the Arabic or Latin scripts.

Responsibilities:

•           Support the director, assistant director and conservators of the Project on a broad range of issues
•           Apply knowledge of current issues and trends in cataloging, conservation and digitisation to improve and enhance the Project
•           Oversee the work of staff on the team
•           Assist with devising and teaching training courses for Library staff
•           Document the Foundation's work at the Library and plan future stages of the Project

Qualifications and Experience:           

•           ALA-accredited master’s degree or a postgraduate diploma in library or information science
•           Knowledge of current and emerging trends of the fields of cataloguing, conservation and digitisation
•           Familiarity with copyright compliance issues
•           Ability to work independently and direct the work of others and excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
•           Training and/or supervisory experience desirable

This is a full-time position based at Tradigital's offices in Cairo. The salary is US$45,000 per annum with an additional housing allowance of 42,000 Egyptian Pounds per annum.  The contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a longer period. We are seeking to fill this position immediately.
