[PADG:1265] RE: Seeking quotation

Hi,
A bit delayed in my response but...   The Texas program use to have a book mark with Paul Banks' 10 laws of conservation.  Gary mentioned 3 of them, the others are:
multiplication and dispersal increase chances for survival of information
books and documents deteriorate all the time
use causes wear
deterioration is irreversible
no reproduction can contain all the information contained in the original
conservation treatment is interpretation
no treatment is reversible.

My favorite was from Ted Honea (he may have been quoting someone else, and I'm only approximating it as remembered): "We don't preserve materials by keeping patrons from using them; we preserve them by keeping patrons using them."

Tyra,

Here are a few of my favorites from Paul Banks.

?No one can have access to a document that no longer exists.?

?The physical medium of a document contains information.?

?Authenticity cannot be restored.?

We're preparing a permanent single-case exhibit about preservation for our special collections library lobby.  This exhibit case will feature a permanent backdrop with sufficient foreground space in the case (it's 43"x43"x12") for changeable displays.  We'd like a quotation relating to preservation included as part of the permanent backdrop---something profound and affecting of course and no more than one or two paragraphs.  We're looking for one great quotation and would welcome hearing your favorites.

Thanks,

Tyra Grant
