Paper Conservator
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens
The Huntington invites applications for the professional position of Paper Conservator in the Preservation Department’s Conservation Lab. The position is an exempt, full time, regular staff position.
Responsibilities: The Paper Conservator examines, documents, and treats works on paper, according to the AIC Code of Ethics. The Paper Conservator houses collections items, maintains object treatment and exhibition records, and may contribute to collections surveys. The Paper Conservator maintains and orders supplies and equipment to care for collections materials. The Paper Conservator may supervise or train interns or volunteers. The Conservator also participates in departmental activities such as educational programs, emergency response, environmental control, and pest management.
Qualifications:
· A Bachelor’s degree is required with the Master’s degree plus a certificate in Conservation from a recognized graduate conservation training program or a Bachelor’s degree plus a combination of equivalent formalized advanced training and experience in the conservation of library and museum paper-based materials.
· Previous experience working in a museum, research library, private conservation practice, or equivalent situation.
· Skill in the treatment of paper-based materials as demonstrated by a portfolio.
· An understanding of the theory and practical techniques of conservation and preservation of paper and art materials.
· Computer literacy, database, and research skills.
· Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
