I know that adding a note in the 583 field
is part of the plan of work for materials deacidified by a group of NY research
libraries using funds from a grant from New York State.

Hello,
Our library has
started a project treating moldy books. While researching
ways to record this action we ran across the MARC 583 standard.
This field seems to fulfill not only our current need but could also be
used for storing other useful information. Before
implementing the use of this particular tag we wanted to know how other
institutions handled recording preservation action information.
Is the 583 tag commonly used, and if so for what actions?
If not, what other methods or options are there? At
what stage of the workflow are these tags updated and does Preservation or
Cataloging staff do it?
Thank you in advance,
Ian Bogus
